Cell phones have quickly gone from being a luxury device to being a necessity for most people. What used to be used "just for emergencies" has become on of our main forms of communication. This is true not just for adults, but for teens and pre-teens, as well. More and more parents are purchasing cell phones for their preteens to stay in contact with their parents after school, when at extra-curricular activities, or in order to be picked up from the mall, movies, or some other social event.

If your child has a cell phone, you also need to consider what kind of charger is best. Do they need a travel charger or a desktop charger? Can they just share your charger? If a desktop charger, where should it be located?

Most adults have a cell phone charger in their vehicle, plugging the phone in as they drive to and from work or while they are running errands. However, if your preteen has a phone, a better option for them would be a desktop charger. A desktop charger can be placed in a strategic location in your home so that it serves as a reminder for the phone to be charged. This has the added benefit of providing downtime when your child cannot be constantly talking or texting on the phone while at home. Some parents have utilized cell phone charging time as homework time. While the phone is in the desktop charger, the child can work on homework.

Another advantage of having the desktop charger in a public area of your home is that it allows you the opportunity to monitor how many calls and texts are coming through for your child, at least for the time period that it is in the charger. If a substantial number of texts or calls are coming to the phone while its battery is being charged, chances are that a substantial number are coming through at other times, as well. Having the phone out in the open in its desktop charger can enable you to prevent the surprise of a hefty texting bill on your child's phone in the future.

If your child is utilizing the desktop charger, this also means that your car charger is available for your phone when you need it. If you've purchased a cell phone for your child so that they can call you when they need to be picked up from an after school activity, you want for the phone to be charged when they need to use it. However, nothing can be more frustrating than having your preteen immediately plug in their phone upon getting into the car when you needed to use the charger for your own cell phone.
